BEE Killer
Preface: since this time the bees have come and gone and come and gone. I see them scouting the tree now again.
I have a huge mulberry in the front yard with many large limbs than need
constant pruning. Men have earned spurs working on this tree. To its
credit, the mulberry leaf is a favorite of desert tortoises who love to
eat the leaves when they can get them. One limb the size of an adult
waist was too near the house and had to be removed. It turned out to be
hollow! Where that leader joined the trunk was hollow too. A cut
was slanted from the side however and left open. The angle was such it
would not much rain to the inside. Things stood thus over a year
and more, but that fall a colony of bees took up residence. We used to
watch them slant and dart in the morning sun. Little kids got up close
to see their coming and goings, always happy. In those years I began
writing every day at 3 A.M. The bees were like thoughts that would fill the
morning hours. -this is the Smudge Report
Pyrethrum
-Chrysanthemum
I did not seek out the info but it came to my door
in the form of two salesbots with scripted tales of being in the neighborhood to
tree -treat- "Kelly" Blossom, at Hank's old house promising:
"interior
flushout, granulation barrier (reapplied every 60 days) extending 20 feet out
from house, power spray, dust weepholes, deweb and treat eaves, spot treat
pests in yard [assuming they see any]. good for ants spiders wasps mice."
But since mice are mammals, also affecting cats, children, quail,, doves, all birds, lady bugs, bees,
butterflies, pill bugs, worms like paving over the yard. They say it's
harmless because "plant based. " He said he would
drink the solution!
Kills Beneficial Insects:
Pyrethrum toxicity: is highly toxic to most insects.
Best
for Spot Spraying:Like any powerful compound, pyrethrum should be used
only for spot-spraying heavily infested plants. You shouldn’t be dousing the
entire garden with it. Exposure to even low doses may lead to toxicity
in some cats.
Exposure to pyrethrum in high levels in humans may cause
symptoms such as asthmatic breathing, sneezing, nasal stuffiness, headache,
nausea, loss of coordination, tremors, convulsions, facial flushing, and
swelling."harmful to fish, but are far less toxic to
mammals and birds than many synthetic insecticides and are not persistent,
being biodegradable and also decompose easily on exposure to light snake
oil soap salesmen like Ecoshield--experience the bliss of pest-free living. Nevertheless, pyrethrum should be handled with
the same caution as synthetic insecticides.are ecothreat
